What teachers carry on their school devices, and how few schools could reach on that went missing
Eight in ten teachers store pupil data on their school device or stay signed in to the systems that hold it. Every evening, most of that data goes home in a bag. And if one of those devices is lost or stolen, fewer than three in ten schools could remotely lock it, and fewer still could wipe it. For most schools, a device that leaves the building is gone for good, and the pupil data on it goes too.

The platforms behind a login - such as assessment systems and safeguarding tools - are encrypted and time out in an idle session. But the weak point is the device itself: the cached emails, the spreadsheet exports, the files saved for offline use. That local data doesn't time out. It sits on the device until someone removes it, and if the device is lost, most schools can't.
